Avenue Q Puppet Musical at Metro Theatre Review

Avenue Q Puppets at Metro Theatre

We went to see Avenue Q at Metro Theatre and it was excellent. Highly recommended, especially for adults who grew up with Sesame Street and can appreciate mature puppet humor!

Avenue Q takes place in a neighbourhood full of both puppets and people. The Tony Award-winning Broadway musical follows the lives and relationships of a number of colourful characters, including real people, puppets and monster puppets. Topics covered in the story include loneliness, unemployment, purpose in life, and relationships (both straight and gay). The show contains mature content, so it’s recommended for adults only. Expect to hear a bit of swearing (but not too much), as well as singing about sexual topics. Also expect to see some puppet nudity!

As with so much that comes out of Metro Theatre, the quality of the production is impressive! We stayed for the talk-back session after the show and one member of the audience said they had seen Avenue Q multiple times, including in London and New York, and he said he was blown away by how the quality of the Vancouver show compared to that of some of the world’s biggest stages. The voice acting especially was amazing!

All of the actors performed remarkably. The two that stood out the most for us, however, were Leah Dubbin-Steckel (who played Kate Monster and Lucy) and Richard Lloyd White (who played both Princeton and Rod). Their voice acting and singing in character was especially amazing.

If you are looking for a fun night out, with music, comedy and wonderfully inappropriate humor, you’ll want to see this show (but leave the kids and your great grandma at home).
