Vancouver and the Lower Mainland region are home to many theatres that host plays, concerts and other shows. Below are some of the best performing arts venues.

 

Vancouver Theatres

This first section features the main theatres located within the City of Vancouver. The list is organized in alphabetical order.

  • The Annex – located at 823 Seymour Street, with 193 seats, this venue is managed by Vancouver Civic Theatres.
  • The Centre Vancouver – “The Centre” seats up to 1,850 people at 777 Homer Street.
  • Chan Centre for the Performing Arts – a big venue at 6265 Crescent Road at the University of British Columbia. It features the Telus Studio Theatre, Royal Bank Cinema and Chan Shun Concert Hall.
  • Granville Island Stage – as its name suggests, this 450-seat theatre is situated on Granville Island at 1585 Johnston Street.
  • The Improv Centre – a theatre at 1502 Duranleau Street on Granville Island that hosts live improv throughout the year.
  • Metro Theatre – located at 1170 SW Marine Drive in South Vancouver, this 300-seat theatre puts on its own shows.
  • Norman Rothstein Theatre – part of the Jewish Community Centre of Greater Vancouver, this 318-seat theatre hosts the Chutzpah Festival each year.
  • The Orpheum – located at 601 Smithe Street, this theatre seats 2,672 people and is also a National Heritage Site.
  • Performance Works – a small theatre at 1218 Cartwright Street on Granville Island.
  • Queen Elizabeth Theatre – a major performing arts venue at 650 Hamilton Street. This theatre can seat up to 2,765 people.
  • Rio Theatre – a 420-seat theatre at 1660 East Broadway in East Vancouver.
  • Roundhouse Community Arts Centre – a community centre with a small theatre at 181 Roundhouse Mews in Vancouver’s Yaletown area.
  • Vancouver Playhouse – owned and operated by the city, this theatre is located at 600 Hamilton Street with 668 seats.
  • VIFF Centre – home of the Vancouver International Film Festival, this venue features a theatre with 170 seats at 1181 Seymour Street.
  • Vogue Theatre – a 1,161-seat theatre at 918 Granville Street in Vancouver.
  • Waterfront Theatre – this 240-seat venue is on Granville Island at 1412 Cartwright Street.
  • York Theatre – a historic venue with 375 seats at 1895 Venables Street.

Theatres in other parts of the Lower Mainland include ones listed below.

  • ACT Art Centre – a proscenium-style theatre with 486 seats at 11944 Haney Place in Maple Ridge.
  • Centennial Theatre – owned and operated by the City of North Vancouver, this venue is located at 2300 Lonsdale Avenue with space for 658 people.
  • Deep Cove Shaw Theatre – a small community theatre at 4360 Gallant Avenue in North Vancouver.
  • Gateway Theatre – located at 6500 Gilbert Road in Richmond, this venue features two stages with different capacities.
  • Massey Theatre – a 1,260-seat proscenium theatre at 735 Eighth Avenue in New Westminster.
  • Michael J Fox Theatre – located at 7373 MacPherson Avenue, this Burnaby venue seats 613 people.
  • Presentation House Theatre – a small theatre in North Vancouver at 333 Chesterfield Avenue.
  • Shadbolt Centre of the Arts – a large facility with two different theatres at 6450 Deer Lake Avenue in Burnaby.
